Residential: Using stained glass in your home
A stained glass window can provide an exceptionally beautiful and stylish enhancement for any property. There is a vast range of choice available when it comes to design, or we can create a bespoke design for you. Bespoke designs are a fantastic way to infuse an element of your personality into your home. Stained glass has many benefits and uses – it can:
- Enhance the period feel of a property.
- Provide interest and character to a more modern or new built property or extension, that might otherwise be rather featureless.
- Allow light to flow into rooms whilst retaining privacy, for example, when used for internal doors or in a bathroom window.
Stained glass panels are a popular feature in many front doorways – either just one panel above the door or complementary panels within the door and on either side.
However, stained glass windows can work well in many other rooms throughout a home. For example, they can replace frosted glass in bathrooms or sit within internal doors to allow light to flow through whilst maintaining a degree of privacy. They are also popular on stairwells or as a skylight in a new extension.
Choosing your design
Your choice may be influenced by various factors, such as the period and presentation of the property. Regardless, they choice of designs is practically limitless. Together, we can come up with a design that suits both yourself and your home. If you’d like to, you are welcome to look at one of our pattern books for inspiration.
If you live in a period property which would have originally featured stained glass, reinstalling the stained glass windows is a simple way to enhance your property and its period feel. We can work with you to establish what the original windows might have looked like (often neighbouring properties will be helpful) to produce a beautiful window.
You might wish to faithfully re-create the original window, or you might choose to use that as a starting point for your own design, perhaps taking inspiration from some elements of other stained glass designs from a similar period. Popular options include designs influenced by Victorian Designs, Art Nouveau (especially Charles Rennie Mackintosh), Art Deco, or traditional designs based on natural elements like leaves and flowers, diamond lattice or other geometric patterns.
You might also wish to incorporate some personalised elements into the design such as your initials, the house number, a motif related to the history of the house or the area, or simply something that means a lot to you.
You may prefer to choose a more contemporary design either to enhance a recently built property or extension, or as a contemporary twist within a period property.
